Oxford County reminds drivers that Pedestrians have the right of way at crossovers

Oxford County has installed two new pedestrian crossovers in Tillsonburg and Norwich. The new pedestrian crossover in Norwich is at Oxford Road 18 (Main Street) between John Street and Pitcher Street. The County has also installed a new on-street accessible parking space near the Canada Post building at 70 Main Street West in Norwich. The new pedestrian crossover in Tillsonburg is operational at the Oxford Road 20 (North Street East) and Coulthard Street/Braun Avenue intersection. 

A pedestrian crossover is a designated crossing area that allows pedestrians to cross the road safely. Drivers and cyclists must yield to pedestrians when they are present and waiting to cross at the designated location. Pedestrian crossovers are easy to identify and have specific signs, pavement markings, pedestrian push buttons and flashing lights.

Pedestrians have the right of way at pedestrian crossovers. Drivers and cyclists must stop behind the pavement markings and wait until pedestrians have completely crossed the road before proceeding. 

Drivers and cyclists not following the rules may face fines of up to $1,000, and drivers may incur four (4) demerit points.

The on-street accessible parking space will provide convenient access to the post office in the village of Norwich for those with accessibility challenges.
