Future Oxford Speaker Series explores ways to prevent excess food waste at home, on the farm, and at institutions

Up to 60% of the waste by weight in black garbage bags in Oxford County is organic waste: potato peels, food scraps, plant matter, paper towels and more.

This month, Future Oxford continues its virtual Fall Speaker Series “Go Organic: Rot and Rescue” to help local residents understand new and more familiar ways of managing their organic waste.

“Rescue,” the second of the two-part series, explores ways to prevent excess food waste at home, on the farm, and at institutions, as well as on a larger distribution scale. The Great Pumpkin Rescue and Food Forward Oxford will also be discussed. Panelists include Bryan Smith, Kerrie Gill, Tom Butler, Janine Jones and Holly Brown.

The first part of the Speaker Series, “Rot,” was held on August 22. It explored ways to reduce organic waste and how to turn it into a resource. Technologies discussed included above-ground composting, green cone digestion, worm composting, lacto-bacilli composting, and dehydration and grinding. The panel included Bryan Smith, Sarah Doyle, Kerrie Gill, Rich Hesterman and Meagan Brennan.
