Township of South-West Oxford / Township of Norwich

Oxford County is implementing changes to improve road safety in the Township of South-West Oxford and the Township of Norwich.

With strong population growth and increased traffic across our communities, Oxford County has been undertaking speed management, traffic calming, and road safety investigations over the past four years to improve safety on County roads.

As a result of reviews, Oxford County is implementing additional traffic calming measures to roads in these areas.

About the changes

Road safety reviews have considered local community perceptions of road safety, the need for stop signs, warning signs and/or crosswalks, traffic speed and volume, posted speed, speed zone limits, collision data and other factors that impact how traffic moves through a community.

Speeding, which poses a serious risk to public safety and property, is influenced by factors other than posted speed limits. Research has shown that speed is largely influenced by the surrounding driving environment and that most drivers travel at a speed they consider comfortable. For this reason, the County’s recommendations focus on proven measures to reduce speed by adjusting speed zone boundaries and providing visual cues, like:

  • electronic speed feedback signs
  • traffic-calming measures (centre delineators, pavement markings)
  • community entrance features (landscaping, street lights, gateway signs)
  • community safety zones

Watch for new electronic feedback signs and more streetlighting on Oxford Road 10 (Culloden Line) in Culloden. The posted speed limit of 60 km/h through Culloden will be extended to better align with the built-up limits of the hamlet. The community boundary sign will be relocated to align with the hamlet limits and improve the overall visibility of the sign.

The speed limit on Oxford Road 40 near Oxford Road 59 will be reduced to 70 km/h. Motorists will notice newly installed electronic feedback signs for incoming traffic when the 70 km/h zone begins.

The 60 km/h speed limit will remain in place and transition points will be extended at both the east and west ends. Watch for a new electronic feedback sign when approaching the hamlet.

The community boundary sign will be relocated to align with the hamlet limits and improve the overall visibility of the sign. Additional street lighting will be added to better illuminate the built-up limits of the hamlet.

New electronic feedback signs will be installed at all three approaches to Foldens Line, Oxford Road 6, and Oxford Road 12. The 60 km/h speed transition zones will extend on the north side of Foldens at Oxford Road 6 and west on Oxford Road 12 at the east side of Foldens. Additional street lighting will be added to help illuminate the built-up limits of the reduced speed zone.

The 50km/h speed limit will remain in place and will be extended at the west end to align with the built up area. New electronic feedback signs will be installed at the north, south, east, and west speed transition points on Oxford Roads 13 and 19. The community boundary sign will be relocated to better align with the village limits. Also, the 50 km/h stretch of Oxford Road 19 will become a Community Safety Zone.

The speed limit on Oxford Road 12 from 150m west of Trillium Line to just west of Chele Mark Drive will be lowered to 70 km/h. The boundary signs will be moved to better align with the adjusted speed limits when entering the village. Also, watch for new electronic feedback signs and more lighting at the east and west approaches as the speed limit changes to 60 km/h.

Additional flexible delineators will be installed on Oxford Road 10 (Culloden Line) in Verschoyle. The posted speed limit of 60 km/h through Verschoyle will be extended to better align with the built-up limits of the hamlet.
