Housing: Let's Get Into It!
Municipalities and partners are advancing the dialogue on the housing crisis
Housing is essential to the wellbeing and economic vibrancy of our communities, but demand has been exceeding supply for decades.
Without adequate housing, it is difficult—if not impossible—for individuals to have employment, food security, social and educational opportunities, or even health. With low rental vacancies, unaffordable rents, and the lack of “missing middle” housing options, finding suitable and affordable housing is a crisis for some people.
For municipalities and their partners, establishing the right range and mix of housing supply has become increasingly difficult given the strong demand for housing and the spike in building costs. Housing Let’s Get Into It: Municipalities Building Solutions to the Housing Crisis,” held on February 7, 2019, brought together 200 municipal councillors, municipal senior staff, planners, housing providers, builders, economic development officers and health planners from across southwestern Ontario to hear expert speakers and collaborate on a solutions “toolbox” for their small urban and rural communities.

Ideas and solutions from the forum's afternoon workshop were collected and presented by SHS Consulting in the Solution Development Workshop Summary Report, released in March 2019.
This document provides a summary of the methodology, activities,
and findings arising from the solution development workshop, with
the goal of helping Ontarians continue the conversation and
consider working on developing some of these approaches further.
