Highlights from the October 24 County Council agenda
County concerns with Quarry Ponds water-taking permit
County Council is being asked on October 24 to make a formal request to the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks to delay a water-taking permit for the Quarry Ponds. Specifically, the County is asking the Ministry to declare a Permit-to-Take-Water (PTTW) application by Carmeuse Lime to be incomplete until an environmental impact assessment and detailed water monitoring program are in place. Among the County’s concerns are the risks of adverse impacts to municipal drinking water and private wells in the area as a result of increased water pumping for Carmeuse’s industrial use. Carmeuse last submitted a PTTW application for three quarry ponds in 2014, and is now seeking to combine all of its water-taking into one PTTW application that makes changes to terms, including volume of water taken, across all ponds. The County is further asking that Carmeuse liaise directly with the County to address its concerns.
